To become enrolled in the School of Music, all prospective students must be accepted by both the School and the University. To apply to the School, complete and submit the School of Music Undergraduate Admission Application.

To apply to the University, complete and submit the University Admission Application.

In addition, you must have an audition or orientation, and take music theory and piano placement exams. Students with no piano experience will not be asked to play. Audition dates are in the Undergraduate Music Admission Handbook. Download Audition Requirements.

Undergraduate Music Industry Majors

To become enrolled in the School of Music, all prospective students must be accepted by both the School and the University. To apply to the School, complete and submit the School of Music Undergraduate Admission Application.To apply to the University, complete and submit the University Admission Application.
Applicants must have attained MUID academic standards in order to attend an Audition/Orientation Day. Acceptance is based on: completion of academic standards; provision of GPA and SAT or ACT scores, and an essay two weeks prior to MUID Orientation Day; attendance on Orientation/Audition Day for placement tests and the Music Industry Orientation. This information is outlined in greater detail in the Music Industry Admissions Handbook.
Acceptance into MUID degree programs is not based on high proficiency on an instrument or voice as with performance or music education majors. Students with limited performance and reading skills will have their audition placement after taking MUTC 1012 and MUAP1100. Students with no piano experience will not be asked to play. Undergraduate Music Minors

The Minor in Music is for students seeking a degree other than Music at the University. The Minor in Music consists of 21 hours: 4 hours Applied Music individual instruction; 2 semesters appropriate ensembles; MUTC 1008 and 1009; 3 hours from MUHL 3301, 3302, 3303; 6 hours music electives; 25 concert/ recital attendance requirement.
To become enrolled as a Music Minor in the School of Music, all prospective students must be accepted by both the School and the University. To apply to the School, complete and submit the School of Music Undergraduate Admission Application.

Any student wishing to minor in Music must perform an audition, take a theory placement test, and be accepted as a minor by the School of Music. Audition dates are in the Undergraduate Music Admission Handbook. Download Audition Requirements.

Undergraduate Non-Music Majors

Non-music majors who wish to take applied lessons must be accepted by both the School of Music and the University. To be accepted by the School, complete and submit the School of Music Undergraduate Admission Application.

To be accepted by the University, complete and submit the University Admission Application.

Non-music majors who wish to take applied lessons are required to perform in an ensemble (group lessons exempt).
Non-music majors interested in enrolling in music theory, piano courses or applied lessons must audition.(Basic Theory (MUTC 1001) and basic Class Piano (MUAP 1100) do not require audition for registration). Theory and piano placement exams are not required for private study on an instrument except for voice which requires a theory placement test.

Non-music majors who wish to participate in ensembles are not required to take theory or piano placement examinations, nor audition for the School of Music. To participate in an ensemble, contact the conductor of the ensemble.

Graduate Music Majors

To become enrolled in the School of Music, prospective students must be accepted by both the School and the University.

Information on application to the university may be obtained from the University Graduate Office of Admissions at 901.678.2911 or from the web site of the Graduate School.

To be accepted by the School, complete and submit the School of Music Graduate Admission Application.

The University requires sealed, official transcripts from an accredited college and successful scores on the GRE or for Master's students only the Miller's Analogy Test
The School of Music also requires an audition for admission in performance, pedagogy, jazz and conducting; submission of scores for admission in composition; and a writing sample for admission in musicology and music education. Complete and submit the Graduate Audition Form.

Schedule an audition on Audition Days on campus by contacting Ms. Kay Yager at 901.678.3766.

To schedule a private audition (other than Audition Days), contact the appropriate faculty member (for keyboard or voice, contact the Area Coordinator)

All students must take proficiency examinations in Music History and Music Theory. These are ordinarily given on the Monday and Tuesday preceding the first day of class each semester. Contact the Graduate Music Office for specific dates and times.
CHECKLIST FOR THE MASTER’S DEGREE

Admission

1. Send an application to the Graduate School of the University; take entrance examinations (GRE or MAT); have transcripts sent.
2. Send an application to the School of Music. Audition for the School of Music faculty(for Performance or Conducting degree.) Send a portfolio of compositions (for the composition degree), or written materials (for Musicology or Music Education degree).

Beginning the program

3. Begin course of study.
4. Take any remedial courses during the first year.

Final year

5. Present the recital (in Performance or Conducting.) Present the thesis to the faculty committee (Music Ed., Orff-Schulwerk, Music History.)

Final semester

6. Take the master’s Comprehensive Examination.

7. During the first week of the final semester, submit both an Intent to Graduate card and a completed Degree Candidacy Form to the Graduate School.

CHECKLIST FOR THE DOCTORAL DEGREE

Admission

1. Send applications to the Graduate School of the University; have transcripts and GRE scores (Ph.D.) or writing samples (D.M.A.) sent.
2. Send application to the School of Music. Audition for the School of Music faculty (for performance or conducting degree); or send a portfolio of compositions (for the composition degree), or written materials (for musicology or music education degree).

First year

3. Begin course of study. Establish committee in consultation with major professor and Assistant Director for Advising and Curriculum. Submit overall Plan of Study to doctoral committee.
4. Take language proficiency exam.

Second year

5. Complete at least two successive semesters as a full-time student (summers included) to complete the residency requirement.
6. The first recital for performance concentrations may be given during the first 27 hours of coursework and before taking the qualifying examinations. (D.M.A. candidates)
7. Take the qualifying examinations. (D.M.A. candidates)

After 40 hours of coursework

8. Take written comprehensive exams. If successful, take oral comprehensive exam. If both are successful, the student is admitted to Doctoral Candidacy.
9. Sign up for dissertation and begin work on the dissertation proposal. D.M.A. students may give the final recital or lecture-recital only after achieving this status.
10. Submit the research document proposal (for D.M.A.) or the dissertation proposal (for Ph.D.) to the doctoral committee.
11. Start writing.

Final semester

12. Submit both an Intent to Graduate card and a completed Degree Candidacy Form to the Graduate School. (Deadlines for these are early and important; see above for details.)
