Dr. Nicholas V. Holland, III is Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Mighty Sound of the South Marching Band and the Basketball Band. He is the music director and conductor of the Symphonic Band, and teaches courses in music education. Additionally, Dr. Holland serves on the faculty of the Community Music School. Dr. Holland graduated from East Carolina University with B.M. and M.M. degrees in music education with emphasis in percussion and conducting. He received the Doctor of Philosophy degree in music from the University of North Carolina Greensboro. His conducting teachers include John R. Locke, William W. Weidrich, Robert Ponto, and Robert Hause. Previously, he was Director of Bands at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia and Director of Bands/Instructor of Percussion at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico. Dr. Holland has five years experience in Drum Corps International, including one year with the Bridgemen from Bayonne, NJ, and four years with the Sky Ryders from Hutchinson, KS. Dr. Holland maintains membership in professional organizations including the CBDNA, MENC, NCMEA, and Phi Mu Alpha. He has received honorary membership in Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, and Alpha Phi Omega, as well as being named a "Friend of the Arts" by Sigma Alpha Iota. In 2001, Dr. Holland was selected as a mentor teacher for Freshmen First program at the University of Memphis. Additionally, he received the "Outstanding Graduate Teacher" award for the UNCG School of Music in 2000, and was nominated for the same award in 1999.
