THREE-SUMMER PROGRAM MASTER OF MUSIC DEGREES
Master of Music in Music Education Master of Music in Orff-Schulwerk
The Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music is pleased to offer a Three-Summer Master of Music Degree Program with concentration in Music Education and Orff-Schulwerk. The degree is structured to allow students an opportunity to complete most, if not all, degree requirements during the summer months. In order to complete all degree requirements for a Master of Music degree, candidates should complete nine to twelve credit hours each summer for three summers.
Concentration in Music Education
The Master of Music in Music Education is structured to enhance the public and private school music specialist's ability to teach music effectively to every child. In order to obtain this goal, music educators will be stimulated by current research in music education to seek, evaluate, and appropriately implement current ideas and developments in teaching music. The degree emphasizes fundamental knowledge of research techniques and scholarly writing standards required for understanding and investigating problems in music and education. Students develop a comprehensive knowledge of the psychological, social, and musical values in music education.
Concentration in Orff-Schulwerk
The Orff approach to teaching is a combination of singing, playing and moving. It is a totality of verbal, musical, and movement expression. This approach encourages creativity through improvisation, movement, and speech. It is an inductive approach to teaching, meaning that through the experience one comes to the theoretical knowledge. All facets of expressing, creating, and performing music are integrated from the first moment class begins. The elements of music (melody, rhythm, texture, harmony and form) are always in the forefront of carefully planned lessons. Students pursuing a pedagogy degree in Orff-Schulwerk will find this a total approach for teaching music to children.
Admission to the Master of Music degrees in Music Education and Orff-Schulwerk is open to anyone with a bachelor’s degree in music education and a valid teaching certificate.

Proficiency Requirements
Music History and Music Theory
All incoming students are required to take examinations in Music History and Music Theory. Students who do not pass these examinations will be required to take review courses in areas of deficiency. Students may not enroll in any 7000 courses in either music history or theory until the respective requirement has been satisfied. Review courses do not count towards the degree. Proficiency exams will be given in the days preceding registration in each term.
Writing/Basic Research Skills
The on-site writing sample will be given the days preceding registration. Students should be prepared to write approximately two pages on a topic provided. Students who demonstrate deficiency in writing and basic research skills may be required to enroll in an English writing course.
Master of Music Comprehensive Examination
The Master of Music comprehensive examination consists of two parts, (1) a style listening test and (2) a written comprehensive test. The written comprehensive exam is based upon coursework. Both the listening and the written portions are taken during the student’s final semester of study or at the end of coursework. You must submit to the Music Graduate Office a list of courses you have taken on which the written comprehensive exam will be based.
The written comprehensive exam consists of six questions. A minimum of three questions must be in the major area and no more than three questions may be from the same instructor. There must be at least one question from a theory course and one from a history course. Each candidate must pass both sections of the exam; four out of five listening questions and five out of six written questions.
Candidacy Form/Intent to Graduate Form/Graduation
The Candidacy Form and the Intent to Graduate must be completed and filed at the beginning of the semester in which the student intends to graduate. It must be signed by the Director for Graduate Studies and the Director of the School before it is sent to the Graduate School. The Candidacy Form and Intent to Graduate are surprisingly early in the semester, often in the first week. Failure to meet the deadline will delay graduation by an entire semester. Check with the Graduate School for the specific date for submission.
